Sonic & Knuckles Collection is a Windows compilation that brings together one of the most celebrated eras of the SEGA saga. Originally released in 1996—though distributed in various markets throughout 1997—this version brought the Mega Drive classic experience to the PC through a collaboration between Sonic Team and Media Kite, under the SEGA and Expert Software labels.
The package includes Sonic the Hedgehog 3, Sonic & Knuckles, and Sonic 3 & Knuckles—the complete adventure formed by combining both titles. This last option digitally recreates the famous cartridge-locking technology: the story flows seamlessly from the first installment into the second, featuring new zones, boss battles, and character abilities. The goal remains to thwart the evil Dr. Robotnik's plans by traversing levels filled with traps, robots, moving platforms, and alternate routes.

As a 2D action-platformer, the gameplay centers on speed, precision, and exploration. Sonic can run at high speeds, perform the Spin Dash, and utilize ramps, loops, and springs to chain together dizzying sequences of movement. Tails offers the ability to fly briefly, while Knuckles can glide, climb walls, and smash through specific obstacles; these unique traits alter certain stages and allow players to discover paths inaccessible to the other characters. Choosing a protagonist is, therefore, far more than a mere aesthetic change.
The collection also offers single-player campaigns featuring Sonic, Tails, or Knuckles, as well as a split-screen two-player mode focused on speed and score-based competition. Additional content includes the special Blue Sphere mode—a series of challenges requiring players to collect blue spheres while avoiding red ones within increasingly difficult mazes. The PC edition also includes save features—a practical improvement over the original versions. Its technical presentation retains the vibrant colors, fast-paced scrolling, and level design of the 16-bit games, though the music is adapted to the MIDI system typical of computers from that era. Sonic & Knuckles Collection thus offers a particularly comprehensive way to experience the conclusion of Sonic's classic era: a fast-paced, accessible, and secret-filled compilation that combines three iconic adventures into a single Windows release.
