Microsoft Flight Simulator 4.0 is a flight simulator for DOS published by Microsoft in 1989 and developed by The Bruce Artwick Organization—the team led by Bruce Artwick following his tenure at subLOGIC. Rather than featuring a traditional campaign or storyline, the game offers an open-ended aviation experience where the goal is to fly, practice maneuvers, execute landings, and explore a vast territory modeled after the United States, Canada, Mexico, and the Caribbean.

This fourth installment represented a significant leap forward from its predecessors. The flight model was overhauled to provide more realistic handling, and various aircraft were added, including the Cessna Skylane, the Gates Learjet, the Sopwith Camel biplane, and the Schweizer 2-32 glider.
