Special thanks to Chris Goiney and Doug Rooke. - INTRODUCTION It's been three long years since the original v0.9 release of Flea X, three years that have given very little thought to four fleas and their cache of weapons. They will languish in the darkness no longer! This is flea as it was meant to be played. All the weapons, all of the power ups, but none of the crashes. So gather some friends, pick up a bottle of Calamine lotion, then sit back and enjoy! Just don't press alt-tab. - FLEAS ... NO, BUGS If you find any bugs in the game that seem like they don't belong, feel free to spit off an email to djfleax@yahoo.com. Your help is greatly appreciated. Oh yes, one last word to the wise, while the game should not crash under normal use, repeatedly opening and closing the program during one boot session might cause a noticeable slowdown in other applications. Restarting your computer will solve the problem. FLEA X v0.9 README - INTRODUCTION Flea X began in mid-March as a test of the Borland GUI for their C++ compiler, ver 4.52. This initial version was programmed in DOS and featured little more than a green dot bouncing around on a thin red line. Then, a week later, I guess I was having a bad day, I began to muse about what fleas do when they get really mad at each other, and what would they do if they had access to heavy artillery, and would I enjoy watching them turn each other into bloody pulps. The answer to the last question was obvious so I started out immediately programming a version of Flea using the windows API called “Flea Wars.” The fleas in Flea Wars could spit at each other and throw grenades, but, due to my inexperience as a programmer, carnage levels were severely limited. I put Flea on hiatus to further my programming studies. With the knowledge of Direct X in my repertoire I began work on a newer and more ambitious Flea. A Flea with power ups and special weapons. A Flea supporting four-player deathmatches. A Flea capable of tracking up to 1,600 pixels of blood at once. Over the past month and a half I have put a lot more time than I’d like to admit fine-tuning blood algorithms and death-cries. Staying up into the wee hours enumerating joysticks and calling WAV files. This is the fruit of my toil. This is Flea X. - SYSTEM REQUIREMENTS Uhh… I’m not quite sure. My system is a PII 266 with 64 megs of RAM and a 16 meg Banshee 3DFX card. Flea is completely stable on my computer and only occasionally suffers minimal slow-down in four-player matches. I have tested Flea X on a Pentium – 200 with 32 megs of RAM and a 2 meg genera video card. It runs fine in two player, but occasionally kicks out. I think this is due to the lack of video memory, but I could be wrong. I run under Windows 95 and have only tested a very old build of Flea X on a Windows 98 machine to disconcerting results. The computer hard-froze twice in 15 minutes. I think it may have had something to do with a bug in my DirectSound wrappers which I have since fixed, but, again, I can’t be sure. You need to have a version of DirectX 6 or better on your computer to run Flea X. - INSTALLATION Unzip the contents of Flea X Zip into a new folder (you should probably call it ‘Flea X’ or something like that). Don’t move any of the files or else things will start to get a little funny. To play, run FleaX.exe. It works best if no other programs are running. - CONTROLS Keyboard A – Up - Up Arrow Down - Down Arrow Left - Left Arrow Right - Right Arrow Power - Right Shift Spit - Enter Grenade - Delete Special - Colon Keyboard B – Up - W Down - S Left - A Right - D (just like Half-Life) Power - M Spit - Space Bar Grenade - N Special - Left Shift Pressing escape during the game brings up a menu that doesn’t work too well, but is fairly self-explanatory (by the way, to really start a new game you have to restart Flea X). Special Moves: The fleas have two special moves: borrowing and super jump. To burrow, walk inbetween two very close pieces of land and press up. This will cause you to burrow. To continue burrowing keep pressing up. To super jump take a normal jump and, while at the height of your jump, press power and down. This will send you hurtling towards the ground. You will then bounce up as a result. While at the height of your jump you can jump a second time. This move more than doubles your normal jump height and is essential to dodging grenades. Other Special Controls: Grenades and big bombs will explode after a certain time limit, but you can detonate them manually by pressing the power and weapon buttons at the same time (assuming you have enough power). You can throw (technically termed “bomb cast”) big bombs by holding down power while you press the Special button. To aim up with the rocket launcher hold power while shooting. The shockwave only deals damage to fleas that are in contact with its parameter (don’t think you can just collect a bunch of power ups and make it gigantic to kill every body, it’s no that easy). To maintain the size shockwave’s current size hold the Special button. To increase its size hold the Special button and Power. To decrease its size let go of all buttons. - OTHER STUFF I WANT YOU TO KNOW Crates. Collect them. Red crates fill your health or power bars. Blue crates increase your maximum health and power. Heart crates affect power and cross crates affect health. Black crates change your special weapon. Crates are destroyed if you shoot them with spit or if they fall past the bottom of the level. Bombs do not destroy crates. Awards. At the end of every level awards my be given to players have earned them in various ways.
